Echoes of Saint Joseph: Saint Benedict’s Parish recovers after damage from Hurricane Beryl

September 25, 2024Saint Benedict’s Parish, in Georgetown Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), includes three churches: Saint Benedict’s, Our Lady of Perpetual Help (renamed and dedicated following a complete rebuild of the roof destroyed by the LaSoufriere volcanic eruptions of 2021), and Saint Joseph. St. Joseph’s presence has been felt significantly there in recent weeks as laborers apply carpentry skills to repair extensive damage to the church roof sustained by the passing of Hurricane Beryl on July 1 of this year.Fortunately, some parish funds were available for the initial work at hand, which began in earnest during August. Since then, many ply boards have been stained and replaced, new felt undercoating installed, and fifteen bundles of shingles nailed into place.
Gratefully, there are no more puddles of water inside needing to be mopped up, the benches (where leaks were most profuse) have been moved back into place, and parishioners can once again worship without dodging interior rainfall.Renovations have been directed by Brother Francis of the Missionaries of the Poor – a wonderful religious community dedicated to service of the gospel, particularly among persons in need. The MOP’s, as they are affectionately known, are wonderful partners with the Redemptorist mission in SVG. The two communities have collaborated on numerous projects in recent years, all the while empowering local young people to help with the tasks at hand. They are growing in knowledge, skill, and confidence as they become proficient with tools and trade.In between projects, which also include restoration of the Liguori House (community residence) roof, time has been given to relief efforts for persons in the Southern Grenadines, hit hardest in the country by Hurricane Beryl. A load of supplies was carried down via fishing vessel to the Catholic church in Canouan.
Parishioners were most grateful to receive much-needed items. A variety of goods were delivered through donations made possible through the generosity of our benefactors who support the Redemptorist Catholic Foundation.Next up is Saint Benedict’s Church in Georgetown. A complete restoration of the roof is planned as the current one has been in place for over thirty years. Weather-related events have taken a toll on the structure. Not only Beryl, but other storms through the years and fallen ash from the volcanic eruptions have battered the building. Serious fundraising efforts, and fervent prayer, are in the works to help finance the project, which will be a costly, but necessary one.
The various communities in the parish feel a positive impact from the rebuilding efforts and those responsible for making it all happen. There is an evangelical effect in the sense that care for the churches lifts hearts and minds to God. A spirit of reverence accompanies the ministry insofar as the investment is not only in a building but in a sacred place to meet God and feel his presence more deeply. A closeness to the people, in the spirit of Saint Alphonsus, assures those who otherwise would be abandoned that they are indeed cared for by a loving and present God. †
