REDEMPTORIST SPOTLIGHT: Meet Fr. Alfredo Medina, Province of Canada

September 22, 2021Like many other vocations, mine begins with my family. My name is Fr. Alfredo Medina Ramos. I am a Redemptorist missionary from the province of Canada and have been appointed to ministry at St. Mary’s Parish in the city of Saskatoon, Canada, since October 2021.
I was blessed to be born into a family that loves God, where we love each other, and especially where I feel loved. I am the 11th of 14 siblings-- all still alive. I was born in Malpaso, Mexico, about 20 kilometers from the city of Zacatecas.
I went to elementary school at the Miguel M. Mora School and was taught by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Guadalupe (HSCMG) in Malpaso. It was there that I started my vocational adventure and thought about the possibility of God's call to religious and priestly life. I served in my parish in various ministries: I was part of the choir, prepared children for First Holy Communion and worked in the parish notary. When I Look back, I see how God was planting in me that seed of religious and priestly life from a very young age.
In 2021, I decided to go to the United States. It was not an easy experience and I did not know what was waiting for me on “el Norte”. But God had other plans for me that I was unaware of, such as the gift of the Redemptorist religious life and the gift of priesthood, all in perfect time.
One day, searching on the internet, I found the religious community of the Redemptorists who served a Spanish parish in Liberal, KS. They were inviting young people who were interested in religious life. I called by phone and sent a letter addressed to Fr. Michael McAndrew, who kindly replied saying that he would send me information about the Redemptorists. The information never arrived, and I did not call them either. Later, as a postulant, I had the joyful opportunity of sharing the mission with Father Mike in Oregon. These were moments that grew and matured in me the Redemptorist missionary vocation.
Three years after contacting Fr. Mike McAndrew, I received a call from Fr. Patrick Keyes saying “Alfredo, I found your name on a list of people interested in the Redemptorists, are you still interested? I have a trip to Los Angeles, and I wanted to know if you want us to meet to talk.” And my immediate answer was “YES.”
I met with Fr. Patrick, and he invited me to a “Come and See” event in Liberal, KS, with two other young people so that we could experience the Redemptorist missionary life. After that week I was invited to be part of the student community in Whitestone, NY, where I had the privilege of having Fr. Patrick as my formator.
The formation was not easy. After some years without studying, going back to university and studying philosophy was a challenge that I had to overcome. In 2008 I entered St. Johns' University in New York and thanks to my confreres and their patience I was successful with my studies. I finished philosophy in 2012 and that same year I went to Chicago to continue my theology at Catholic Theological Union. In 2013, I began the novitiate in Toronto, Canada-- an experience that I would love to do again. After the novitiate, I traveled to Mexico to profess my first vows as a Redemptorist.
I had a missionary experience with our confreres of the Province of Mexico. I participated in various missions, I helped minor seminary students with English classes, and went out to serve communities every Sunday to help celebrate the Liturgy of the Word. I returned to Toronto in 2017 to continue theology and finally I graduated in 2020.
I was ordained a Deacon on September 3, 2020, by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Toronto Robert Kasun CSB and was assigned to St. Mary's Parish in Saskatoon under the guidance of Fr. Mick Fleming, C.Ss.R. from whom I learned a lot about parish pastoral life. I had the opportunity to live three months of mission with him in Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, in the Arctic Ocean, sharing the faith with the brothers in that area. It was an unforgettable experience, and I hope to return there someday.
On May 27 of this year, I was ordained a priest by Bishop Sigifredo Noriega Barceló, in the Cathedral of Zacatecas. On May 29, I celebrated my first Mass in the same parish that originally saw me born through Baptism, nourished me with the Eucharist, received my Confirmation and where I made my first vows as a Redemptorist missionary.
As a Redemptorist missionary, I have had the opportunity to know different places of mission. As a postulant, every summer I went to different parishes to help and to learn more about the charism of the Redemptorists in its different facets. I was blessed to see most of the houses in the Denver Province, such as Biloxi, Minneapolis, Whittier, Fresno, Houston, Chicago, Oregon, and more. As a postulant, I earned the title of “postulant forever”, for my duration of 7 years in this process!
Thanks to the Redemptorists, I have experienced that I belong to a family extended all over the world with the mission of reaching the poor and especially the most abandoned.
SPANISH:Como muchas otras vocaciones, la mía comienza en mi familia.Mi nombre es Alfredo Medina Ramos, misionero redentorista de la provincia de Canadá y designado al ministerio en la Parroquia de Santa María en la ciudad de Saskatoon, Canadá desde octubre del 2021.
Fui bendecido de haber nacido en una familia donde se ama a Dios, donde nos amamos unos a otros y especialmente donde me siento amado. Soy el numero 11 de 14 hermanos, todos aun vivos. nací en Malpaso, un pequeño pueblo en el estado de Zacateca, México, a unos 20 kilómetros de la ciudad de Zacatecas.
Fui a la primaria en el Colegio Miguel M. de la Mora dirigido por las religiosas Hijas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesus y de Santa María de Guadalupe (HSCMG) en Malpaso. Fue ahí donde comencé esta aventura de mi vida, la posibilidad del llamado de Dios a la vida religiosa y sacerdotal. Servía en mi parroquia en varias actividades; era parte del coro, preparaba niños para la Primera comunión y trabajaba en la notaría parroquial. niños. Viendo atrás, veo como Dios venia plantando esa semilla de la vida religiosa y sacerdotal desde mi tierna edad.
En el 2021 decidí aventurarme hacia los Estados Unidos. No fue una experiencia fácil, y no sabía que me esperaba en “el otro lado”. Gracias a Dios, él tenía otros planes que yo desconocía. El regalo de la vida religiosa redentorista y el regalo del sacerdocio, pero todo a su tiempo.
Cuando llegue a los Ángeles trabaje seis años en un supermercado coreano preparando sushi, pero nunca deje la idea del seminario. Un día buscando en internet encontré la comunidad religiosa de Redentoristas que atendían una parroquia en español en Liberal, KS., y hacían la invitación a jóvenes que estén interesados en la vida religiosa. Llame por teléfono y mande una carta dirigida al P. Michel McAndrew quien amablemente me contesto diciéndome que me enviaría información sobre los redentoristas. Nunca llego la información y de mi parte tampoco insistí en llamarlos. Después ya como postulante tuve la dicha de compartir la misión con el Padre Mike en Oregón en la pisca de la cereza. Estos fueron momentos que me hicieron madurar en mi vocación misionera redentorista.
Tres años después de contactar al P. Mike McAndrew, recibí una llamada del P. Patrick Keyes diciendo: “Alfredo, encontré tu nombre en una lista de personas interesadas en los redentoristas, aun sigues interesado? Tengo un viaje a Los Ángeles y quería saber si quieres que nos reunamos para hablar”. Sin pensarlo respondí que “SI.”
Tuve la reunión con P. Patrick y me invito a un “come and see” a Liberal, KS., con otros dos jóvenes para que nosotros pudiéramos tener la experiencia de la vida misionera redentorista. Después de esa semana fui invitado a formar parte de la comunidad de estudiantes en Whitestone, NY, donde tuve el privilegio de tener al P. Patrick como formador.
El estudio no fue fácil, después de algunos años sin estudiar, el volver a la universidad a estudiar filosofía fue un reto que tuve que superar. En 2008 ingresé a St. Johns’ University in New York y gracias a mis compañeros y a su paciencia que me ayudaron con los estudios. Terminé la filosofía en 2012 y ese mismo año fui a Chicago para continuar con la teología en CTU. En el 2013 comience el noviciado en Toronto, Canadá -una experiencia que volvería a hacer-. Después del noviciado viaje a México para pronuncia mis primeros votos como religioso redentorista.
Tuve experiencia misionera con los cohermanos de la Provincia de México. Participe en varias misiones, ayude a los estudiantes del seminario menor con las clases de inglés, y salía a las comunidades marginadas cada domingo para celebrar la palabra. Regresé a Toronto en el 2017 para continuar con la teología que finalmente en el 2020 recibí mi diploma.
Fui ordenado diacono el 03 de septiembre del 2020 por el obispo auxiliar de la arquidiócesis de Toronto Robert Kasun CSB y fu asignado a la Parroquia de St. María en Saskatoon bajo la guía del P. Mike Fleming de quien aprendí mucho de la vida pastoral parroquial. Tuve la oportunidad de vivir tres meses de misión con él en Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, en el Océano Ártico compartiendo la fe con los hermanos de esa área. Fue una experiencia que inolvidable y espero regresar allá.
En mayo 27 me ordeno sacerdote el Obispo Sigifredo Noriega Barceló, en la Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas. El 29 de mayo celebre mi primera misa en misma parroquia que me vio nacer en el Bautismo, que me alimento con la Eucaristía, donde recibí la Confirmación y donde hice mis primeros votos como misionero redentorista.
Como misionero Redentorista he tenido la oportunidad de conocer diferentes lugares de misión. Como postulante cada verano iba a diferentes parroquias para ayudar y para conocer mas el carisma de los redentoristas en sus diferentes facetas. Tuve la bendición de conocer la mayoría de las casas de la Provincia de Denver, por ejemplo, Biloxi, Minneapolis, Whittier, Fresno, Houston, Chicago, Oregón y otras más. Como postulante me gane el título de “Postulant forever” (postulante eterno), por mi duración de 7 años en este proceso.
Gracias a los redentoristas he experimentado que pertenezco a una familia extendida por todo el mundo con la misión de llegar a los pobres y especialmente a los mas abandonados.
