Cristo Rey High School, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on the campus of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Redemptorist Parish in Kansas City since 2006, celebrated Founder’s Day on November 11 – just two days after our own Redemptorist founding!
Each year in the name and spirit of Sr. Xavier Ross, who brought her community from Nashville to the then difficult and dangerous territory of Leavenworth in 1858, the school honors those who have contributed to the mission and success of Cristo Rey High School.
This year’s honorees included our own Fr. Gary Ziuraitis, who is nearing the completion of eight years as pastor. He has been a steady presence in a variety of capacities: Board member, Mass chaplain and landlord who initiated and administers a Parish- School facilities committee. The Sisters and school wished to recognize his tenure, which has included collaborating with a succession of three Board chairs, three presidents and three principals.
The missions of the Redemptorists, the Sisters of Charity and Cristo Rey High School intertwine beautifully on the church campus in partnership to the 280 students, who are guaranteed a placement in college at graduation.
Fr. Gary also wished to express his thanks to the confreres who prayed for him during a recent bout of acute illness and hospitalization that prevented him from participating in the Electoral Convocation. He is now well on the mend. He also extended a big thank you to Fr. Tom Danielsen, who did yeoman’s duty maintaining pastoral services at the parish during the absence of most members of the community, who were participating in the Electoral Convocation in Tucson.
