For the Feast Day of St. Alphonsus, founder of the Redemptorists, the Annapolis Partners in Mission group gathered with the Redemptorist and deacons of St. Mary’s Parish to celebrate St. Alphonsus’ legacy and vision. The evening began with a joyful Gaudete gathering, a prelude where everyone had a chance to connect in person—a special treat for this Partners in Mission group which usually meets via Zoom. Lively conversation filled the room before everyone moved into the main dining area.
Fr. Patrick Woods, C.Ss.R., led the gathering and prayer service, setting a reflective tone for the evening. Fr. Pat, who has long supported Partnership in Mission and leads the group in Annapolis, shared stories about St. Alphonsus, including the account of his leaving Naples on a donkey, a powerful symbol of his choice to renounce wealth and privilege to serve those most in need. The hymn “O God of Loveliness” reminded all present of the deep spiritual foundation that guides our Redemptorist mission. This gathering offered a moving reminder of the value in knowing and honoring our roots.
Reflecting on St. Alphonsus’ journey and mission strengthens each person’s commitment to serve as part of the “Redemptorist Family”—both lay and professed. A festive dinner followed, and the room filled with laughter and conversation around the tables.
Rooted in the legacy of St. Alphonsus, we find both inspiration and challenge in his courage, compassion, and far-reaching vision. In following his path, we commit ourselves anew to bringing hope, healing, and redemption where it’s needed most.
Together, as lay and professed members of this mission-driven Family, we carry forward his vision with a collective strength that draws from our unity, extending St. Alphonsus’ profound mission into the world with each encounter, each act of compassion, and each shared moment of faith. †
