Pope Francis, after considering the positive conclusions of the analysis conducted by the historians, theologians, cardinals and bishops, consultors of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, on the life, virtues and martyrdom of the servants of God Vicente Renuncio Toribio and 11 companions of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, approved the promulgation of the Decree on their martyrdom dated April 24, 2021.
The 12 missionaries, six priests and six brothers, members of the two Redemptorist communities of Perpetual Help and Saint Michael the Archangel in Madrid, were all assassinated between July 20 and November 7, 1936, at the beginning of the bloody religious persecution that took place in Spain from 1936 to 1939.
These 12 Redemptorist martyrs will be beatified at 11:00 am on Saturday, 22 October, 2022, during a liturgy in the Almudena Cathedral, presided over by the apostolic delegate, Cardinal Marcello Semenaro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
The ceremony will be preceded by a youth prayer vigil on Friday, October 21, at 8:30 p.m., in the Parish-Sanctuary of Perpetual Help in Madrid. The events will end with a Eucharist on Sunday the 23rd, at 12:00 noon, presided over by the Redemptorist Superior General, Rogerio Gomes, CSsR, and will coincide with World Mission Sunday, which this year is celebrated under the motto “You will be my witnesses”.
